6 Steps to Pack With a Plan

Wardrobe Wednesday: 6 Steps to Pack With a Plan

Have you ever packed a suitcase full of clothes and still felt like you had nothing to wear when you arrived?

Or worse…you brought half your closet, but somehow none of it actually worked together?

That is exactly why I pack with a system.

Packing well is not about bringing more.

It is about bringing pieces that make sense together.

When your travel wardrobe has a plan, getting dressed becomes calmer, easier, and so much more intentional. You are not standing in a hotel room wondering what goes with what. You already know. Your outfits have been thought through, your pieces have a purpose, and your suitcase actually supports the trip you are taking.

This week for Wardrobe Wednesday, I am sharing the 6 steps I use to pack with a plan.

This is the same system I use when I travel, and it is the same system I have used for years when women hire me to pack them for trips.

Because fabulous, you do not need to pack your entire closet.

You need the right pieces, chosen with intention.

Step 1: Pick a Color Story

This is always where I start.

For this trip, I am building everything around brown.

But you could do this with black, navy, white, cream, olive, denim, red, or any color that feels like you.

The color itself is not the point.

The decision is the point.

Once you choose a color story, everything becomes easier. Your shoes make more sense. Your accessories make more sense. Your layers make more sense. Your outfits start working together before they ever go into the suitcase.

A color story gives your travel wardrobe structure, but it still gives you room to play.

Step 2: Choose Shoes + Accessories

This is where a lot of women get stuck.

They pack the clothes first, then realize the shoes do not work, the bag does not make sense, or they forgot the accessories that would have made the outfit feel finished.

I like to think about shoes early because they take up space, they need to be practical, and they determine so much of how the outfit feels.

Then I pull the accessories.

Jewelry. Belts. Scarves. Hats. Bags. Sunglasses. Anything that helps the outfit feel complete.

Accessories are not an afterthought.

They are often what make the same base piece feel completely different.

Step 3: Add 1–2 Toppers

A topper is anything you can layer over your outfit.

A jacket.
A cardigan.
A wrap.
A button-up.
A blazer.
A kimono.

The key is that your topper needs to work with most of what you are packing.

If it only works with one outfit, it may not earn a place in the suitcase.

When you choose one or two strong toppers that work across multiple looks, you instantly create more outfit options without adding a lot of extra pieces.

Step 4: Grab the Right Undergarments

This is not the glamorous part, but it is one of the most important steps.

The right bra.
The right shapewear, if you wear it.
The right slip.
Bike shorts.
Camisoles.
Anything you need to make the outfit actually feel good on your body.

Because nothing is worse than arriving with the dress and realizing you did not pack the one thing that makes the dress wearable.

Your undergarments are part of the outfit plan.

Do not skip this step.

Step 5: Create Day-to-Night Outfits + Take Photos

This is where the magic happens.

I do not just throw pieces in a suitcase and hope I figure it out later.

I create the outfits before they ever go in the bag.

I think through what I can wear during the day, how I can change it for dinner, what accessories shift the look, and how many ways one piece can work.

Then I take photos.

Because when I arrive, I do not want to stand in the hotel room wondering what I planned.

I want the plan already in my phone.

A shoe change, a different bag, a stronger earring, a clutch, a belt, or a bolder lip can take one outfit from daytime to evening without needing a completely different look.

This is how you pack lighter and still feel fresh, polished, and intentional.

Step 6: Pack Everything in Bags

This is one of my favorite little systems.

Once I know what I am taking, I separate everything into bags.

Workout clothes go in one bag.
Bathing suits go in one bag.
Daily clothing goes in one bag.
Undergarments go in one bag.
Accessories are separated too.

That way, even if I cannot fully unpack when I arrive, I still know exactly where everything is.

I am not digging through my suitcase trying to find one belt, one earring, one swimsuit, or the top I know I packed somewhere.

Everything has a home.

And when everything has a home, getting dressed becomes so much easier.

The 6-Step Packing System

Here is the full system:

  1. Pick a color story

  2. Choose shoes + accessories

  3. Add 1–2 toppers

  4. Grab the right undergarments

  5. Create day-to-night outfits + take photos

  6. Pack everything in bags

This is how packing becomes calmer, easier, and more intentional.

You are not packing random pieces and hoping they work.

You are creating a travel wardrobe that already makes sense before it ever goes in the suitcase.

And that is the difference.

Because when you arrive, I do not want you feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or disconnected from what you brought.

I want you to feel prepared.

Polished.

Confident.

And fabulous.

This week, I wanted to show you the full system first.

Next week, we are going to go deeper into taking outfit photos and how to use them when you travel.

Then the week after that, we will talk about how to fit it all into one bag.

Because yes, I can go away for a month with a carry-on.

I do not always want to…but I can.

Now I want to know: what is the hardest part of packing for you?

Tell me in the comments, because I may cover it in one of the next Wardrobe Wednesday videos.

Let’s get dressed! XO
